2002 Regional Co-operation and Development Forum
Economic Governance
3 November 2002
Alice Springs Convention Centre, Alice Springs
The Forum, now in its sixth year, brings together local government representatives and economic development practitioners to examine the performance, prospects and policies for Australia's regions.
The theme for this year's Forum is Regional Economic Governance. It will examine how councils are working together in partnership with other tiers of government, business and the community to improve economic outcomes at the regional level.
A number of Australian and international case studies will be examined in detail. They will draw upon best practice examples that look at the benefits of devolving more resources and responsibility to the local and regional level to enhance economic development prospects.
In addition, policy options for improving regional economic governance in Australia will be discussed. The Forum will be an excellent precursor to the ALGA National General Assembly 2002, Civil Society: The Leadership Challenge'.
The influential State of the Regions report will also be highlighted at the Forum. The report analyses regional trends in economic growth, population, income, employment and unemployment and provides an in-depth look at major issues impacting regional economic performance.
