High Court of Australia
The High Court, as the highest court in Australia, considers the native title matters on appeal from the Federal Court of Australia. The High Court's website includes general information on the High Court and recent judgements.
Federal Court of Australia
The Federal Court is the primary court for considering all native title applications. The Federal Court's website provides details on native title proceedings and updates on native title matters. It also includes general information on the Federal Court processes and recent Court decisions.
National Native Title Tribunal
The Tribunal is established under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) to undertake a range of tasks in relation to native title matters, including the mediation of native title. NNTT's website includes a wide range of information on native title.
Australian Parliament
The Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) establishes the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Native Title and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land Fund Committee. The Committee conducts inquiries into native title matters. Their reports can be accessed on the website.
Federal Government Departments and Agencies
The Australian Government has launched a whole-of-government website. This site points to official Commonwealth, state and territory internet entry points. Each entry point is given a brief description and a link to follow.
Federal Attorney-General's Department
The Attorney-General's web site provides copies of the guidelines for obtaining financial assistance for native title matters.
Indigenous Land Corporation
An independent statutory authority to assist Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders to acquire and manage land so as to provide economic, environmental, social or cultural benefits for themselves and future generations.
Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC)
The Office of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner is located within the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. The Commissioner is required under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) to produce an annual native title report. Reports have been provided each year. These can be accessed on the HREOC web site. The HREOC web site also outlines the role and functions of the Commission and provides an explanation of human rights in the Australian and global contexts.

State and territory government agencies with native title responsibilities

Some state governments have placed their policy documents or other relevant information on relating to native title on the web. Links to all state and territory governments are provided. Those of particular relevance to native title are also included.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission
ATSIC's website includes information about programs and policies, how to contact commissioners and regional offices, and regional information including community profiles.
FAIRA Aboriginal Corporation (Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action)
FAIRA has been in existence since 1977 as a community-run Aboriginal organisation specialising in research into the rights of Indigenous peoples. While the focus of FAIRA is upon the rights of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland, FAIRA is an active participant in local, state, national and international jurisdictions. Its website has an extensive range of documents relating to representations by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to the United Nations.
National Indigenous Working Group on native title (NIWG)
The National Indigenous Working Group on Native Title (NIWG) developed from a series of workshops on Native Title. These brought together Native Title representative bodies, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, the Indigenous Land Corporation, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and the National Aboriginal and Islander Legal Services Secretariat.
Native title representative bodies.
The Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) provides for the establishment of agencies to represent the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in relation to native title matters. While the federal minister with responsibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters makes the appointment of bodies to be native title representative bodies, ATSIC is responsible for administering and for providing the funding for these bodies. ATSIC has developed a new website for the Native Title Representative Bodies (NTRB's). On this website it is possible to access a map of Australia showing the area covered by the different NTRBs. To identify the relevant NTRB for your area, locate the map of Australia on the NTRB website.

A legal search site containing a search facility for legislation and cases.
The Australian Legal Information Institute (AUSTLII)
The most comprehensive site for legal research. It contains a search facility for legislation, court decisions and cases.

Reconciliation Australia
When the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation reached the end of its term a new non-government organisation was established, Reconciliation Australia.
