Toolbox   Commitment to action: Responding to the growing older population

Why should a council commit to action on ageing?

Seniors are a significant and growing part of local communities. This demographic trend will lead to new opportunities and new challenges for local government. By considering this issue now, local councils could possibly minimise the negative impacts of population ageing on local communities and maximise the opportunities it presents. Moreover, local government's community focused roles clearly entrench a relationship with seniors and place it in a unique position to recognise, understand and respond to the needs of the growing older population.

How can your council make a commitment to action on ageing? This section provides downloadable tools for change agents and champions of ageing:

Word document Tool 1
Sustaining action on ageing - This tool is a checklist designed for you, as champions and change agents, to maximise the development of an integrated, whole-of-council approach to population ageing by reviewing key success factors and barriers to success.
Word document Tool 2
Preparing the ground work for action - This tool is an actions guide to help you start the ageing strategy development process. It includes six actions supported by local council examples.
