ALGA has developed this occasional paper series - Ageing-in-place: Implications for local government - to offers academics and practitioners a forum for the dissemination of the latest ideas in ageing research relevant to local government and local communities. The papers presented in this first edition add considerable informed analysis to the social and economic implications of an ageing population for local government.
Awareness to action: Local government's response to population ageing
The intention of this paper, Awareness to action, is to assist local government to make further progress in planning for an ageing community. The first section of the paper highlights the main reasons why population ageing is a significant issue for local government. The next section provides an initial framework for understanding seniors and their needs now and into the future. The final section of the paper discusses the importance of timely action by local government in response to population ageing. The paper also provides key resources and a self assessment checklist to assist local councils to plan for an ageing community.
2006 Ageing awareness and action survey
ALGA has released the results of the 2006 survey on ageing and local government. The survey, an initiative of the Australian Local Government Population Ageing Action Plan, attracted a strong response with 226 councils participating. The survey results will assist ALGA to build the capacity of local government to plan for an ageing population.
Age-friendly built environments: Opportunities for local government
ALGA has launched a new resource paper, Age-friendly built environments: Opportunities for local government. It contains case studies and six fact sheets, which cover a range of age-friendly built environment issues of relevance to councils. ALGA places a high priority on promoting age-friendly built environment issues and is supporting the Australian Government's National Speakers Series, 'A Community for All Ages - Building the Future'.
