Murray Darling Basin

The Murray Darling Basin Commission

The Murray Darling Basin Commission (MDBC) assists in the management of the Murray Darling Basin and advises the Ministerial Council in regards to water, land and environmental resources in the Basin. Local government is represented on the Community Advisory Committee, ensuring that local government plays a role in the management of the natural resource base in the Basin.

The $150m Living Murray implementation plan was developed in 2004 to help restore the health of the River Murray. A number of projects lie under the plan, including funding to support the investigation and development of water recovery projects. Local Governments can put forward ideas on possible cost effective infrastructure improvement projects focussing on water recovery. Examples of infrastructure improvement projects include the installation of pipelines, lining of sections of irrigation channels, construction of works to change how storages operate, installation of metering systems and decommissioning of some supply structures and systems. Generally, matching funding or in-kind contributions will need to be offered by the project proponent.

Funding is also available to restore health to floodplain forests, improve fish passages along the river and for salinity projects.
