Natural Resource Management

Welcome to ALGA's NRM policy and research area. Environmental management is a core function for local government. Local government plays a key role in the management of Australia natural resources. The responsibilities of councils across Australia, vary across jurisdictions, and reflect differences in under state and territory legislative and regulatory frameworks. State and territory local government associations deal with state and territory governments on state specific issues.

At the national level ALGA works closely with the Australian Government Department of Environment and State Ministers and officials on major initiatives the Ministerial Council of Natural resource Management (NRMMC). NRMMC role is to promote the conservation of sustainable use of Australian natural resources.

ALGA also makes submissions to the Australian Government on Natural Resource Management initiatives. ALGA is a strong advocate for additional resources for councils to fulfil their role in natural resource management.
