Coasts
A booming property market, a healthy tourism industry and Australians desire to live by the sea have resulted in a large influx of residents, both permanent and part-time to coastal shires.
- Coast to Coast 2006
- ALGA presentation to the NRM workshop at Coast to Coast 2006
(PPT 300 kb).
The presentation highlights the importance of local government engagement in coastal zone management through the regional NRM model, outlines some of the hurdles local government faces and presents three case studies. In addition, the presentation explores ideas for future NRM programs to increase local government participation and improve environmental outcomes. - Coastal survey report
- During November and December 2004, the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA), with financial assistance from the Australian Government, undertook a survey of coastal councils. There are around 230 councils who manage Australia's coastline, however there are some issues around what constitutes a coastal council. Some shires may not border the coastline, but the council is responsible for the management of estuary and intertidal areas.

- Case studies of coastal councils
- As part of the ALGA coastal zone management project, a number of councils were chosen to provide a case study analysis of their coastal projects. In all cases, there were too many initiatives to describe for this exercise, so several key projects have been selected for discussion. Council contact details are provided if further information is required.
- Discussion paper
Increasing coastal councils capacity to manage the natural resource base - 22 August 2005: The purpose of this paper is to bring together a range of environmental issues facing local governments managing Australia's coastal zone. The issues covered in this paper have been highlighted as a priority by councils who have participated in recent work undertaken by ALGA, such as through the survey of coastal councils. The discussion paper focuses on high growth regions, but this is not to say that our pristine and sparsely populated coastal regions do not require attention as well - they do.
- Coastal Council Discussion Group
- Councils and others involved in the management of natural resources in coastal areas are invited to join the ALGA coasts discussion group. The discussion group will provide councils with the opportunity to discuss their environmental issues and find solutions. The list will also be used to alert councils to coastal news and initiatives.
- Resource centre
- A collection of useful websites, research organisations, online research reports and insight into what some councils are up to. The Centre also contains links to state websites with updates on what each state is up to.
