Don’t let rubbish become part of the scenery this Clean Up Australia Day!

Clean Up Australia and the Australian Local Government Association are calling on councils across the country to get involved - Clean Up Australia Day, Sunday 5 March 2006; the nation's largest community based environmental event.

Now in its 17th year, the annual Clean Up Australia Day inspires hundred of thousands of Australians to clean up the environment and in March 2005, over 670,000 volunteers cleaned up an estimated 8,450 tonnes of rubbish.

Promoting the day in newsletters, via phone messages, and websites; registering sites; collecting rubbish; distributing kits; and providing skip bins and additional material; helps Clean Up Australia deliver the campaign, reach a broader audience and achieve a cleaner environment.

Being involved in Clean Up Australia Day will allow you to raise the mayoral profile, identify problematic illegal dumping sites, support community group links and remove substantial amounts of rubbish from your council area.

To assist you, Clean Up Australia’s council extranet gives you easy access to sites listed in your council area and template advertisements and media releases are available to help raise the profile of your involvement.

All councils around Australia will receive a Council Expression of Support form, a form which indicates the level of support your council can provide. Please return these forms to your state coordinator by Friday 16 December 2005.

To register a 'Clean Up Australia Day', 'Business Clean Up Day' or 'Schools’ Clean Up Day' site or for more information, visit www.cleanup.com.au or phone 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329). All registered sites will be sent a free clean up pack.

"Clean Up Australia Day shows us first hand the impact of rubbish in the environment. I encourage everyone to get involved and experience the positive contribution you can make to your community. Make March 5 the day you start to make a difference," Ian Kiernan said.

All Business, Schools and Clean Up Australia Day sites registered by 1 February will go into the draw to win a Kyocera Digital Camera. Visit www.cleanup.com.au for terms and conditions.
