Ministerial Forum on Insurance Issues
Commonwealth, state and territory finance ministers and an ALGA representative have been meeting to coordinate a national response to the public liability and professional indemnity insurance crisis.
- Wide-ranging package of reforms

The meeting was the eighth in a series of highly successful meetings held over the course of the last 3 years which has resulted in all jurisdictions implementing a wide-ranging package of reforms. Ministers noted the very significant progress made by all jurisdictions in areas including state and territory personal injury laws, amendments to the Trade Practices Act 1974, professional standards legislation and proportionate liability. - Long-term care for the catastrophically injured

Commonwealth, state and territory ministers, or their representatives, and the Senior Vice-President of the Australian Local Government Association (the Ministers), met today in Hobart to discuss ongoing reforms to improve the availability and affordability of liability insurance. - Professional indemnity insurance

Ministers agreed that reform of professional indemnity insurance requires a package of measures including professional standards legislation, proportionate liability, amendments to the Trade Practices Act 1974 and amendments to section 54 of the Insurance Contracts Act 1984. - Professional indemnity insurance

Ministers agreed that professional standards legislation should result in significant benefits for consumers by requiring professionals to comply with rigorous standards of risk management and to take out compulsory levels of insurance. There was strong support amongst jurisdictions to progress nationally consistent professional standards legislation. - Public liability insurance

Commonwealth, state and territory ministers and the President of the Australian Local Government Association (the Ministers) met today to continue to address a range of issues surrounding the availability and affordability of public liability insurance. This meeting has followed two highly successful meetings on this issue held in March and May this year.
